Members of Waynesville R-VI’s leadership team toured the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence Museum Complex at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., on Aug. 8, 2024. The complex includes the U.S. Army Military Police Regimental Association Museum, U.S. Army Engineer Museum and the US Army Chemical Corps Museum. The museums house thousands of artifacts, including textiles, insignia, equipment, weapons and vehicles. More than 60% of Waynesville R-VI students are military impacted.

Members of Waynesville R-VI's leadership team attended three events today, Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, including the Back to School Extravaganza at Waynesville High School, the Fort Wood Community Spouses’ Club Membership Drive at Woodlands Neighborhood Center and the Stonegate Community Center Back to School Bash on Fort Leonard Wood. Through the generosity of churches, businesses, clubs and organizations and their employees and the many volunteers, free backpacks, school supplies, giveaways and food items were available at the events. Waynesville R-VI Superintendent Hilary Bales shared "Back to School" information during the Community Information Forum on Aug. 7, 2024, in Lincoln Auditorium on Fort Leonard Wood, including about upcoming Meet the Teacher nights, enrollment information, orientations and how families can stay up to date with the mobile app.

Four individuals will be inducted into the Waynesville R-VI Wall of Leaders on Sept. 26, 2024, at Waynesville High School following Showcase Waynesville Schools. The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which is expected to begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the main entrance to WHS where the bronze tiger is located. Those being recognized for Lifetime Achievement – Alumni are the late William C. Anderson Jr. and the late Jim Bales. Those being recognized as Outstanding Educational Professionals are Erwin “Erv” Morriss and Lula Mae “Luge” Hardman. Brief information about each follows. Lifetime Achievement – Alumni The late William C. Anderson Jr. was one of 18 graduates of the Waynesville High School Class of 1937. He served in the Citizen Military Training Camp at Fort Leavenworth and in the Civilian Conservation Corps before enlisting as a private in the 406th Infantry of the U.S. Army Reserve Corps as World War II was looming in Europe. Stationed in the Philippines in 1941, CPT Anderson found himself in the Battle of Bataan. Captured, he endured the infamous “Bataan Death March” and the terrible conditions of prisoner of war camps from 1942-45. On Jan. 20, 1945, he died aboard a Japanese transport ship and was buried at sea. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and posthumously, the Bronze Star. The late Jim Bales graduated in 1960 and served in the Missouri National Guard. An entrepreneur, he joined his family business, Bales Construction, which built many subdivisions, commercial buildings, churches and school buildings over the years. He served as a member of the Waynesville R-VI Board of Education for eight years, including as president for one year, and continued to attend Tiger basketball games throughout his lifetime – a sport he loved playing as a WHS student. His passion for the building trades was especially evident as he awarded the Les and Lenora Bales Scholarship to Waynesville Career Center students for many years. Known as an outstanding role model and for his quiet generosity, he was also a member of Faith Baptist Church. Outstanding Educational Professionals Erwin “Erv” Morriss spent 39 years in the field of education with 31 of those years in the Waynesville R-VI School District, serving as an assistant principal, high school principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent until he retired in 2000. A highly respected member of the community, he led with an unflinching focus on students, staff and the community – especially helping to lead efforts to build new facilities, including a new high school. His positive impact reverberates as the many teachers he hired impacted generations of Tigers. He also coached Little League and served as president of the National Association of Military Impacted Schools. He has been a member of state teacher and administrator organizations, Lion’s Club, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Sojourners Club and Waypoint United Methodist Church. Lula Mae “Luge” Hardman spent 30 years teaching in the Waynesville R-VI School District, retiring in 2001 as a history teacher at Waynesville High School. She was proud of her students’ history day projects, especially when they secured awards at the state and national levels. Her ongoing support of “student/friends” through social media confirms the strong relationships she built with students through the years. She has received teaching awards from the Missouri Historical Society, Missouri Council for the Social Studies and Daughters of the American Revolution. She also was an adjunct professor for 20+ years for Drury University, retiring in 2015. Her passion for youth, education and service to her community continued when she was elected to the Waynesville City Council and later as mayor of Waynesville in 2012 and 2016. Also on Thursday, Sept. 26, Showcase Waynesville Schools – an evening spotlighting the talented students from robotics to musical performances to dance – will begin at 5 p.m. with interactive displays. Musical and dance performances will begin at 6 p.m. in the WHS Auditorium. Showcase Waynesville Schools will be free and is open to the public. #wayschools

Students who are members of the “Painting your Passion” LEAD group at the Waynesville Sixth Grade Center will have new options this fall, thanks to a donation of 72 cases of transfers from Dixie Belle Paints and Cheryl Keaton of Eccentric Originals in Waynesville. The items were donated to Kim Ramirez, WSGC teacher and the sponsor of the painting LEAD group. The mission of ‘Painting your Passion’ LEAD group is to enhance the physical culture of the building. The group will be placing positive messages in the restrooms, creating murals in the hallways and putting displays on windows. Eclectic Originals, a retailer of Dixie Belle Paint Company and DIY products, said the transfers will be used to support arts education at the center. "We're excited to partner with the Sixth Grade Center to provide students with access to high-quality art supplies and creative opportunities," said Keeton, owner of Eclectic Originals. "By supporting arts education, we hope to inspire the next generation of artists and creators in our community. On Monday, July 29, 2024, Deputy J. Mendez and Jon Rigsby were officially commissioned by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, and are now officially School Resource Officers (SROs) for the Waynesville R-VI School District. Rigsby will serve at Waynesville High School. Mendez will serve as the new SRO at Waynesville Sixth Grade Center – a position that was made possible by local taxpayers approving Prop 2 in April 2024.
