AmeriCorps recognized in national newsletter
Waynesville R-VI’s AmeriCorps program was highlighted in the November 2024 issue of the nationwide AmeriCorps newsletter.
The newsletter stated the following, “The Waynesville AmeriCorps Program provides academic support through tutoring, mentoring, service-learning, and enrichment, with fitness and wellness support, to students in the Waynesville, Saint Robert, and Fort Leonard Wood Communities in Missouri. More than seven out of 10 of the students supported are military-connected children whose parents predominately serve at Fort Leonard Wood. AmeriCorps members help lead Club TIGER, an afterschool program that lets students explore and develop their talents, while gaining critical thinking skills for learning through the delivery of high quality, hands-on, project-based programs in a variety of content areas. During the 2023 – 2024 school year, 45 members served in the Waynesville R-VI School District with about one-third of those members being high school seniors serving in after school programs and summer school.”
U.S. News and World Report has named all elementary and middle schools in the Waynesville R-VI School District as the Best of the Best.
All (East, Freedom, Partridge, Thayer and Wood Elementary Schools) have earned the 2025 Best Elementary Schools badge and all middle schools (Waynesville Sixth Grade Center and Waynesville Middle School) have earned the 2025 Best Middle Schools badge.
The rankings for elementary and middle schools were released on Nov. 14, 2024, and the announcement was made by Superintendent Hilary Bales at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, Nov. 18.
"We are so proud of our students, teachers and staff for their accomplishments and for once again earning these badges," Bales said. “It takes everyone – our staff, our students and our supportive community -- to achieve this level of excellence.”
The schools have earned the right to have a U.S. News and World Report badge for being among the top 40 percent of all elementary and middle schools in Missouri. Waynesville High School also has been named in the top 100 high schools in the state; the district is waiting to hear the 2025 badge announcement for high schools.
There will be no school in the Waynesville R-VI School District on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, in observance of Veterans Day.
Bus delays may occur this afternoon;
Waynesville R-VI buses may be delayed this afternoon (Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024) due to traffic being diverted from I-44 onto Historic Route 66.
The Waynesville R-VI School District is seeking volunteers for its Partners on Patrol program, which is modeled after “Dads on Duty” programs.
“It makes me feel better to know that while I’m in class learning, someone is walking in the hallway and looking around, keeping an eye on things,” said one sixth grader on Nov. 4, 2024.
A partner on patrol is an adult community member who:
provides a positive influence to help create a safe school environment
increases visibility and adult presence
provides encouragement while assisting with supervising students
“Partners on Patrol also serve as positive role models who help promote the growth, well-being, and academic success of our students, while adding one more layer of safety for our students,” said Superintendent Hilary Bales. “Parents and community members are invited to become Partners on Patrol.”
A Partner on Patrol spends at least one hour each week being a positive presence in the hallways at Waynesville Sixth Grade Center, Waynesville Middle School, and/or Waynesville High School while assisting with supervising 6th - 12th grade students between classes. Partners on Patrol do not replace principals or school resources officers, but instead deliver big smiles, dispense positive affirmations, and perhaps share a few corny jokes while increasing adult visibility and presence.

Partners on Patrol volunteers must complete a background check (the form is available for download at https://core-docs.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/4597/WRV/4649828/Volunteer_Application_Front__Back_Fillable__updated_7_24_.pdf. Background check forms are also available at schools and at the Administration Building. Once approved, partners on patrol will attend a brief training session and then pick a time to be present for at least one hour each week.

WIN (afterschool) buses are expected to be delayed by 15 to 45 minutes this evening (Monday, Nov. 4, 2024), due to traffic delays that are the result of interstate traffic being routed through town.
Team spectacular students at the Waynesville Sixth Grade Center dissected owl pellets to understand how predators affect their local ecosystem. Their research ties into the book, “Hoot,” by Carl Hiaasen that all the sixth graders are reading this year. While examining the sanitized pellets, students were heard saying, “How hungry was he?” and “No way, look at this!”
Waynesville High School’s student government association will host a Trunk or Treat event tonight from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the WHS parking lot. #wayschools
Waynesville 4th, 5th and 6th graders who qualified in the mile participated in Stampede in the Park today, Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, in Waynesville City Park.

Angela Houf, a library media specialist at the Waynesville Sixth Grade Center, was presented the Project Teach Award for the first quarter during the Waynesville R-VI Board of Education meeting on Oct. 14, 2024.
Houf’s project, "One School, One Book" reinforces reading instruction, increases parental involvement, bridges the home-school connection and builds a true community of readers.
The project includes a $100 stipend from Personnel Services.
