About the musical
The Musical Theatre International website at https://www.mtishows.com/ states the following about the musical, “Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right! Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.”

In addition to their protective glasses, WHS students received Culver’s custard sundaes from the USO in celebration of April being the Month of the Military Child as they entered Tiger Stadium to view the eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. With parental permission and through special glasses, Waynesville High School and Waynesville Career Center students viewed the moon passing in front of the sun, learned facts about the eclipse and heard a few dad jokes.
Each year, the USO delivers custard sundaes to Waynesville R-VI students and staff in the district’s 11 schools. The custard honors the resilience and sacrifices of those whose families serve. A special thanks to the USO volunteers for delivering and handing out the treats both to students outside and inside WHS and Culver’s for the custard sundaes.
The community is encouraged to wear purple for the Month of the Military Child on April 15, which is Purple Up Day. #wayschools

Six Waynesville High School students attended the 2024 Missouri Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference.
The four WHS students who competed at the conference came home with medals as follows. Sommer Freesmeier and Faith Bohrer earned a silver for their chapter service project display. Skylar Ringo earned a silver medal in the leadership and Rachel Scobee earned a bronze medal in event management. In addition, Luke Crader and Fatima Diallo attended as WHS representatives.
Students, advisers and guests from 187 schools attended the FCCLA Conference, March 17-19, 2024, at Margaritaville Lake Resort and Conference Center in Osage Beach.
Almost 1,600 delegates from across the state represented more than 8,600 members of Missouri FCCLA. The conference centered on the student-developed theme “Missouri FCCLA: Out of this World” representing how Missouri FCCLA members are launching their leadership to new levels.
About 800 students participated in 81 competitive STAR Events – Students Taking Action with Recognition. Events include Entrepreneurship, Culinary Arts, Job Interviews, Chapter Service Projects, Event Management, Early Childhood Education, Sports Nutrition, and many others. More than 180 students and teams advanced to national competition, which will take place June 28-July 3, 2024, in Seattle, Wash.
Students also were able to attend workshops on leadership development, community service, career preparation, and healthy living. Exhibits from Missouri colleges, universities, and vendors were also present at the conference. Student voting delegates elected the 2024-2025 Missouri FCCLA State Executive Council and raised money for our state outreach project benefitting LOVEtheLOU.
FCCLA is unique among student organizations because projects and events--such as the State Leadership Conference--are planned and run by its student members. This prime focus of Missouri FCCLA, youth-centered leadership, helps members develop those and skills for life such as planning, goal setting, problem-solving, decision-making, and interpersonal communication—necessary in the work place and in the home. #wayschools
