Rubber duck boat races

Students in Ana Hay’s classes at Wood Elementary competed in ruby ducky boat races and were having so much fun that adults and students at recess joined in the friendly contest during summer school.

Kindergarteners were practicing the letter “R” for race and rubber ducky, while older students were practicing the phonics sound “ace” as in race, face and lace. They also practiced the “oa” sound like in boat and float. Students also wrote about their boats and the race, practicing those phonics sounds in their writing.

Students then had to build a boat that wouldn’t let in water, but would make it the fastest across the water. They were able to use a water squirter or a paint stick to move the water to make waves to get their boat across the fastest. They were not allowed to touch or push the boat itself.
