Bottom and Morgan named to Wall of Leaders
The Waynesville R-VI School District Foundation has announced the 2021 Wall of Leaders honorees. Dr. Carey Bottom, a 1968 graduate, has been named the 2021 Lifetime Achievement – Alumni Award recipient and Nelson Morgan, a teacher for 26 years in the Waynesville R-VI School District, has been named the 2021 Outstanding Educational Professional recipient.
Their bios, which follow, will be engraved on a plaque and installed on the Wall of Leaders at Waynesville High School.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT – ALUMNI
Dr. Carey Bottom
A 1968 Waynesville High School graduate, Dr. Carey Bottom earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in chemistry from Missouri University of Science and Technology in 1972, 1975 and 1979. His superior technical expertise and understanding of business economics make him a go-to expert in pharmaceutical and related industries, leading start-up and existing ventures. A research chemist and product innovator, he held U.S. patents, published numerous scientific articles in chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences, and has been recognized by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration for advancing capsule technology, including breakthroughs in softgel capsule use. He also served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, Military Intelligence. Dr. Carey Bottom is honored with the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award – Alumni Award.
OUTSTANDING EDUCATIONAL PROFESSIONAL
Nelson Morgan
As an early adopter of project-based learning, Nelson Morgan promoted hands-on activities to reinforce students’ understanding of history, while igniting a lasting passion. For 26 years, he combined his journalism degree, storytelling talent and his memory for trivia to bring history to life for his students. He initiated cross-discipline activities, including poetry units, journals, play performances, book reports and geography bees. His students’ History Day projects stretched the imagination, frequently winning district competitions. As a Navy veteran, he easily connected with military impacted students and also served as a mentor to new teachers, promoted recycling, embraced diversity and volunteered in the community. Nelson Morgan is being honored with the 2021 Outstanding Educational Professional Award.
The pair will be recognized during the 2022 Showcase Waynesville Schools that will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2022.
