Raider team finishes 10th in nation in mixed team
The Waynesville JROTC Raider Team attended the U.S. Army Cadet Command Raider Nationals in Molena, Ga., from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, 2019. The team finished 10th out of 37 teams in the Mixed Team (Co - Ed) Category, out of more than 100 teams from more than 1,750 programs around the country.
“We had some issues and setbacks this season with injuries, but the next person(s) stepped up and filled the gaps,” said Col. (Ret.) Charles Williams, senior Army instructor in Waynesville’s JROTC program. “Our team came together under the leadership of Seniors Shawn Berrios and John Cotto and performed very well on all five events. Several of our times on the five events were faster than last year’s times. Overall, we were very pleased with the team’s performance.”
Shawn Berrios, team captain, finished 9th out of 45 in the Male Ultimate Raider event - a 3-mile road and cross country run carrying a 35-pound rucksack, which includes a low crawl under a wire obstacle, and finishes with an 8-foot wall. His time was also faster than his last year’s time.
Kirsten Millican completed as the Female Ultimate Raider. She stepped in at the last minute, due to an injury, and did well, finishing 24th out of more than 40 cadets.
