Six of the 18 Waynesville Career Center students who were representing the State of Missouri were named among the Top 10 in the nation in their SkillsUSA respective contests.

More than 6,400 career and technical education students from across the nation converged in Louisville, Ky., for the 55th annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in late June.

After a week of competition and leadership activities the awards ceremony was held at Freedom Hall in front of a sell-out crowd. Two WCC students were called onto the stage to receive medals. Dalton Whittle, a WCC computer maintenance student, earned a 1st place medal in the Residential Systems Installation and Maintenance contest. Travan Richards, a WCC video production student, earned a 3rd place medal in the Prepared Speech contest. In addition to their medals each student received prizes, including scholarships and tools.

While only 1st through 3rd place students are recognized on stage, several other WCC students placed in the top 10 in the nation. These students included:

  • Mattison Parker, a computer maintenance student, placed 8th in the Telecommunications Cabling contest.
  • Sarah Mckenzie, a culinary arts student, placed 9th in the Restaurant Service contest.
  • Garrett Curry and Brad Farrow, video production students, placed 8th in the Audio/Radio Production contest.

SkillsUSA was founded in 1965 and has an annual membership of more than 360,000 students and teachers among 19,000 local chapters. Waynesville Career Center’s SkillsUSA chapter has more than 155 student members.
