Coach Pilz presents basketball to Joe Johnson III

Joe Johnson III, a former Waynesville High School standout boys basketball player, received a basketball from Chris Pilz, WHS head boys basketball coach, during halftime of the boys basketball game on Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, at WHS.

“Joe is one of the most fierce competitors I have coached in my 28 years,” Pilz said. “Joe was respected by his teammates and opponents. When Joe was on the floor, we always had a chance to win.”

Johnson attends Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan., on a basketball scholarship.

At WHS, Johnson was a four-year varsity starter, played 108 games for the Tigers and scored 1,403 career points. During that time, he earned the following accolades:

  • Member of two district team titles in 2013-14 and 2015-16
  • Member of the #1 state-ranked 2014-15 WHS Tigers team that finished with a 24-3 record
  • Scored a career high 33 points vs Hillcrest in February 2016
