WHS to host Military Appreciation Night on Friday, Feb. 8

Waynesville High School will host Military Appreciation Night on Feb. 8 at the home boys basketball game.  All active duty service members and military retirees with military ID will be admitted to the games free of charge.

In addition, students who earned a 3 or better on their AP exams in math, science or English language arts will be recognized before the varsity game at approximately 6:30 p.m. The 50 students, along with 32 graduates from the class of 2018, earned a total of $10,900.

The funds were made available through a college and career readiness program from the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), thanks to a grant from the Department of Defense Educational Authority (DoDEA). Waynesville was the first school district in Missouri to implement this program and this is the fourth year for the checks to be presented to WHS students.

“In addition to showing our appreciation and gratitude for our military, we also want Soldiers to see the impact they are having on our students. It is because of the DoDEA grant in partnership with NMSI that our AP students are receiving $100 for each AP exam score of 3 or higher,” says WHS Principal Randy Luebbert.

One of WHS’s Partners in Education – the 787th MP Battalion – is expected to attend Military Appreciation Night.

Both the freshman and JV games will begin at 5:30 p.m. The varsity game is projected to begin at 6:45 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.
