• AmeriCorps Service Description

AmeriCorps members are volunteers of the Corporation for National and Community Service who are sponsored by a local community organization. In the case of Waynesville AmeriCorps, the Waynesville R-VI school district is the sponsoring organization; the Community Resource Office manages Waynesville AmeriCorps members and their activities.

AmeriCorps members are exclusively involved in education; Waynesville AmeriCorps members serve in various District schools, providing individualized tutoring and teacher aid services. In addition to tutoring in schools, AmeriCorps members also serve in the Club TIGER Afterschool Program where they provide academic tutoring and lead clubs and activities.

There are full time and part time positions open every year at Waynesville AmeriCorps. Those who sign up for a full time position can expect to be assigned to a school within the district for the first half of their day, and then to Club TIGER for the second half of their day - this makes a volunteer's day longer than the average work day. Part time AmeriCorps members will serve in either a school or Club TIGER. A small number of AmeriCorps members are involved in volunteer recruitment.

Snack in a Pack
Snack in a Pack (SIAP) provides supplemental food packs over weekends and holiday breaks for students who may otherwise go hungry while not in school. Snack in a Pack is managed by the Waynesville AmeriCorps VISTA program.
SIAP provides weekly meals for approximately 325 students within the Waynesville R-VI School District. SIAP is a 100% donation-driven program that relies on the generosity of its partners, donors, and the multitude of community volunteers to continue its mission to feed hungry children and improve educational success.
The cost to support each student receiving a pack is approximately $200 for the school year. With the current number of student recipients, the total cost to feed all of them is approximately $65,000 each year. Snack in a Pack is always in need of donations (monetary or in-kind) and the help of volunteers interested in supporting the program.
