Learning Enrichment & Acceleration Program (LEAP)
LEAP is a program for identified gifted students in the Waynesville R-VI Schools.
For instructional and personnel purposes, the LEAP is divided into five different components: grades K-2, grades 3-4, grades 5-6, grades 7-8, and grades 9-12. The goal of LEAP is to nurture the gifts and abilities of our academically talented students. Field experiences are an ongoing aspect at all levels. Students travel to many historic and cultural sites in Missouri and surrounding states. The LEAP program differs in the materials and teaching techniques used compared to regular classroom instruction.
A LEAP class is to have a minimum of five students but not to exceed 15 students. Transportation is provided to and from the students’ home schools as needed.
For kindergarten students, the first semester is devoted to school-based class visits by the LEAP teacher for identification purposes. Qualifying kindergarten students are placed in the program early in the second semester.
First through sixth grades are grouped by grade level and meeting days vary according to the number of students placed in each grade level.
LEAP 7-10 is built into the student’s regular schedule so classes are attended daily. LEAP 11 and 12 meet during scheduled Tiger Time.
