Classroom Expectations:
All members of the band must be in their seats with their classroom supplies in order to not be counted as tardy/missing from the class period. Students are provided 5 minutes at the start of their class to ensure their instrument is properly assembled. Band classes are a fast-paced environment that require members to be fully engaged and ready to work-we have high expectations regarding behavior. If needed, intervention measures will be used to remove a member from rehearsal if they have become a distraction to their peers and themselves. If needed, an alternative assignment will be provided for those who are in need of intervention.
When a member forgets their instrument/music, they will receive a warning on their first offense. Those individuals will be required to participate in class by singing and following along. Anytime after their first offense, members will be provided an alternative assignment that is required to be finished and returned for grading the next school day.
Concert uniform:
All members will be required to wear their “Sunday’s Best” for each concert. However, this does mean that jeans with holes and hoodies will not be allowed. Dresses must reach past the knees while sitting and be conservative in nature. Shoes must be clean in nature. Please do not wear shoes that will shed dirt/mud at any concert. Button-up shirts with conservative pants are preferred. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out in advance of the concert. When wearing marching band uniforms, each member is responsible for checking out and checking in the same uniform with all of its components.

Classroom Grading and Homework:
All band courses will have a variety of assessments scheduled throughout each grading period. Every day members will be given “informal” in-class assessments to provide the instructor with an understanding of where each member’s skill sets are within the current unit. This form is not graded, but it is expected that all members participate.
“Listening Assignments” will occur once a week. Each assignment will be worth 40 points. This assignment provides an opportunity for the student to experience music that they would not normally seek out. Each member of the band will hear music that corresponds to professional musicianship on all band and orchestra instruments. This is an important part of what we do. We can use information gathered from each assignment to create an educated opinion of what sounds good and what does not.
“Formal” assessments will happen 3-4 times a month. This will provide a capstone performance to demonstrate mastership of specific keyskills. Each test will be graded on a 1-100 point scale and can be retaken as many times in the six-week grading cycle. ALL IN CLASS RETAKES MUST BE SCHEDULED AHEAD OF TIME. Communication is key and it is the member’s responsibility to discuss this matter with the instructor.
“Pass Offs,” are graded quizzes submitted by the student digitally on Canvas. This test will provide the student the opportunity to demonstrate instrument specific key skill mastership. All “pass off” quizzes must be submitted 3 days before the grading period ends.
Lastly, all concerts are required in order for members to pass the class. This provides a summative presentation of gained key skills and also relies on all members being present. Every member plays an important role that we cannot go without major distraction from music making.
Classroom Correspondence:
Most correspondence will be made through the “Remind” app. Please look over the “Remind” form to sign up for notifications.
